Google has officially launched its first African cloud region in Johannesburg, South Africa, marking a significant milestone in the continent's digital transformation journey. The launch event, held on March 19, 2025, at the Gallagher Convention Centre in Johannesburg, brought together a distinguished assembly of industry leaders, government officials, and key stakeholders to celebrate this monumental achievement.

The event featured keynote addresses from prominent figures, including Tara Brady, President of Google Cloud Europe, Middle East, and Africa; Alex Okosi, Managing Director of Google Sub-Saharan Africa; and Solly Malatsi, South Africa’s Minister of Communications and Digital Technologies. Their speeches underscored the transformative potential of cloud technology for African businesses and individuals.

The establishment of the Johannesburg cloud region represents a substantial investment in South Africa's digital infrastructure. An independent economic impact study by Access Partnership estimates that this initiative will contribute a cumulative $90.6 billion (R1.7 trillion) in gross economic output between 2025 and 2030, and support the creation of approximately 314,900 jobs by 2030 in South Africa.

This development is poised to accelerate the African tech ecosystem by providing organizations with the resources needed to scale, innovate, and compete in the global marketplace. Businesses across the continent now have access to high-performance, secure, and low-latency cloud services, facilitating enhanced data analytics, improved customer experiences, and streamlined operations.

Furthermore, the presence of a local Google Cloud region is expected to foster skills development and create employment opportunities within the ICT sector, contributing to the broader goal of economic growth and digital inclusion in South Africa. This initiative not only positions the country as a technological hub in Africa but also demonstrates Google's commitment to supporting the continent's digital transformation and economic development.
